Why visit Berat
Berat is one of Albania's oldest continuously inhabited towns, with a castle that is still lived in today. The Mangalem and Gorica quarters preserve centuries of Ottoman domestic architecture, and the Onufri Museum holds remarkable 16th-century icons.
Berat's nickname comes from the endless rows of windows that stare out from the white houses stacked up the hillside. Inside the castle walls, medieval churches and a working neighbourhood sit above the Osum River. Across the bridge, Gorica offers quieter lanes and river views. Berat is a manageable, walkable city and one of the best introductions to Albania's layered history.
