When to go
May–June and September are the ideal months for most travellers: the sea is warm enough to swim, the mountains are accessible, and the famous beaches aren't yet at capacity. July and August bring the most reliable beach weather but also the biggest crowds and highest prices.

May–June
Warm, green and uncrowded. The best all-round months — good for hiking and the first warm sea.
July–August
Peak summer: hot, busy and at full capacity on the Riviera. Book ahead. Best for guaranteed beach weather.
September
Warm sea, thinner crowds and cooler evenings. One of the best months to visit.
October–April
Quiet and cool. Cities and lowlands are pleasant; the high Alps are largely inaccessible due to snow.
