Albania Road Trip

Albania is a rewarding country to drive — compact, scenic and varied, with mountains, coast and historic towns within reach of each other. Here's how to plan it.

Three great routes

The Riviera Drive

3–5 days

Vlore → Llogara → Dhermi → Himare → Saranda → Ksamil. The classic coastal road trip.

History Loop

4–6 days

Tirana → Kruje → Berat → Gjirokaster → Apollonia → Tirana. UNESCO towns and ruins.

Alps Crossing

4–6 days

Shkoder → Lake Koman (ferry) → Valbona → Theth → Shkoder. Mountains and the famous hike.

Driving in Albania

Main roads between cities are generally paved and in fair condition. Mountain roads — especially to Theth and in the Alps — can be rough and narrow; a higher-clearance vehicle helps. Drive defensively: local driving can be assertive and livestock on rural roads is common.

Car rental

Rental desks are at Tirana airport and in the main cities. A small economy car is fine for the Riviera and cities; consider something with more clearance for the Alps. Check insurance coverage carefully and photograph the car at pickup. One-way rentals are possible between major hubs.
